330 swifts counted.

Time: 7:40pm - 8:10pm CST

Date: September 12, 2008

Location: a chimney of the AFL-CIO Building, 1106 Lavaca Street, Austin, Texas

Weather was partly cloudy, with high, thin clouds; temperature was in the upper 80s. Humidity was high. At about 7:55 winds, presumably originating from Hurricane Ike in the Gulf of Mexico, began picking up noticeably.

This count showed a considerable drop from the number of swifts found here on August 21: about a 40% decrease.

Location: 4311 Sinclair
Weather: cloudy, mild winds
Site: chimney and adjacent swift tower
Results: 10 individual swifts counted overhead, flying in formation and 'buzzing' chimney and tower, at 7:55 birds disappeared w/o entering either structure despite doing what we call 'practice runs' for dropping in ( we usually have seen this just before they dropped in to one or both structures)

There is obviously a group roost in the area we have not located, or it could be the tower on Shoal Creek, about 1/4 mile from our house, hope to count there tomorrow night
