1000-1200 swifts

Roger Stout

New Brighton, PA

I sent the answer to how many swifts spotted Sept 11, 12, 13. However, yesterday, Monday, September 14, 2009 at around 9:00 am there were at least 100 chimney swifts "flitting" around all over this neighborhood which is in New Brighton, PA 15066-1126, the neighborhood is the Oak Hill area of New Brighton, PA. New Brighton is about 30 miles west of Pittsburgh, PA. I hope this can be listed as a chimney swift spotting.

1. Hather Street Residence
Sept 12 @ 7:45PM
Small group of swifts that I have been monitoring all summer were still hanging on, although I had counted 8 on the August count, I could see only 6 this night. I did see six again this PM Sept 16th, so the guys are still hanging around. Interestingly they were flying in a formation not unlike the Blue Angels. Pretty neat.

2. Charles Blucher Home - across the street from Blucher Park. Counted on Monday, Sept 14 between 7:30PM and 8:15PM. The number counted in August was 57+ the Monday count was 110+, seems like the regulars at the Blucher Home had invited a few guests. We have completed the Chimney Swift kiosk and two towers - the
official opening of the kiosk is tomorrow Sept. 17. We can only hope that the swifts using the Blucher Home chimneys will notice them and perhaps use them when they return next year.

Description: Residential chimney

Notes: We were disappointed this year. We saw very few chimney swifts, and only 1 went in our chimney.

We also were disappointed that no babies were raised in our chimney this year. The swifts arrived on time in early April, but by June, when we would normally start hearing babies chittering, the swifts had gone.

I guess we'll need to get our chimney swept this year, and maybe cut down some tree limbs that are starting to get close to our chimney.
