Sunday, August 8, 2010, 8:28 PM, I counted four chimney swifts flying into my chimney. I live in north west Gainesville, Alachua County, Florida. The swifts come to my chimney every year and can be heard chirping both inside the room and outside by the chimney. I saw more than four swifts flying around in the sky but only counted four that actually entered the chimney. I watched from 8PM until 8:50PM. The chimney has not been used for at least 25 years. It does not go to a fireplace but to a hole in the wall for a wood stove.
I counted 133 swifts between 8-8:40PM on 8/8/2010 entering the school chimney located at 518 S Franklin St, Toulon IL. The weather was a typical hot, humid August day for central IL.
I counted at this site last year twice and will count on the Sept weekend.

Friday, August 6, 2010: Under a clear sky at 78 degrees Fahrenheit, I watched 560 swifts enter the two-story brick chimney at the south end of the National Guard Armory at 79 West William Street in Delaware, Ohio. The first swift entered at 20:21, and the last dropped in at 21:13.
Saturday, August 7, 2010: I watched a two-story chimney at the Galena Methodist Church building, located at 109 Harrison Street in Galena, Delaware County, Ohio. The brick chimney measures 78 by 48 inches on the outside. Under a fairly clear sky at 70 degrees, I counted 1010 swifts enter the chimney between 20:30 and 21:06.
Sunday, August 8, 2010: I returned to the National Guard Armory and watched 540 swifts enter their roost between 20:10 and 21:08. The sky was clear at 76 degrees.
Both buildings are vacant and are for sale, creating uncertainty for these important chimneys.
On Saturday evening, Aug. 7, I counted 85 Chimney Swifts entering the chimney at the York Central School in Greigsville NY. Weather was clear and about 70 degrees. The first swift went in at 8:34 pm, the last at 8:50.

The numbers of swifts using this sight is down substantially from 2009. Last year the numbers observed were between 170 and 320. This year the max seems to be in the twenties. Perhaps other roosts are used.

8/6 -- Friday evening a big 7 (that's right, seven) in the NE tower of the water barn. They were quiet and did not circle prior to descending. Bummed.
Also, noted a single swift coming OUT of the small tower on the top deck (a nesting site this year).
8//9 -- Monday evening 26 counted going into the "swiftern" in the field. They did circle and chat, but some came in and out several times before deciding to stay in. And, it was pretty dark by the time the last 6 or so went in.
We have observed a dozen or so playing around the turret in the early evening, but they don't seem to be roosting in the water barn or top deck towers. Perhaps the swiftern?
At Middleton Regional High School on the evening of 8 August 2010, we had the best Chimney Swift count that I have seen this season. I was observing from 20:24-21:10 ADT, and counted/estimated 254 swifts. The first one entered at 20:40, but the "estimated" comes in because about 200 entered in the 3 minutes from 20:56-20:59. Nicolle Davis's team was videotaping them (or whatever the term is when there is no tape), so she may be able to give us a more accurate count. Several others were present for viewing, but did not seriously try to count the birds.
