September 8, 2002 (continued)

Fairfax, VA:  On Sunday evening, Sept. 8, 2002, we observed and counted at least 3400 Chimney Swifts entering a chimney at Luther Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Road, Fairfax, VA, 22042. The birds began entering the chimney at 7:35 pm and were all in by 8:05 pm.

We had visited this same site 3 weeks ago and estimated 3-400 birds, so the flock has increased tremendously.

Middleton, Nova Scotia:  Middleton Regional High School, Middleton, Nova Scotia, Canada -
Sunset was at 7:38 p.m., sky overcast, very windy, warm -- I observed the big brick chimney from 7:35 to 8:15 p.m., by which time it was really too dark for further looking -- ZERO swifts seen ( a single crow and a single duck were the only objects of interest).

Austin, TX:  counted this weekend and we currently have ten birds using our chimney on  Platt Lane - does not appear that the other houses are being used for roosts  although 3 houses [including ours] had nests this year.

Montello, WI:  I counted 250 chimney swifts in an old chimney tower left over from the granite quarry in downtown Montello, WI., as they left the roost on Sept. 9th., at 7:30 a.m. central time.

Holt, MO:  Wood CS tower, West
temp: 84 degrees F.
clear, light breeze
34 swifts
1st one in 7:50 pm
last one in 8:00 pm.

Austin, TX:  After counting between 250 and 320 swifts in the concrete Castle over the past few weeks, we were somewhat disappointed with a Saturday count of 82 and a Sunday count of 132.

Somonauk, IL:  I found a Chimney Swift roost on September 8, 2002, in Somonauk, Illinois (DeKalb County). I counted about 60 Chimney Swifts going into this chimney. I found this roost by bicycling around town at dusk. This is the first time I saw this roost, and there were no Chimney Swifts in this area on Saturday, Sept. 7.
There is another chimney in Somonauk that traditionally has served as a roost, but all the Chimney Swifts left this roost about 2 weeks ago. I counted 120 Chimney Swifts at this roost from 8/25 through 8/27. From 8/28 though 8/30 there were no swifts there, and then on 8/31 there were about 60 at this roost.

Davenport, IA:  Hello. I know that you wanted data from last weekend, but I hope last night will do, Sept. 10th.   Myself and my fiancé located a large roost in Davenport, Iowa while returning home. At about 7:45 PM I saw approx. 400-450 Chimney Swifts enter a chimney at Quicks Muffler Shop. Located at 1411 W. Locust St. Davenport, IA 52804.

I'll be sure to keep my eye on that location throughout the years. I talked to the manager at a restaurant next to the shop and they said that the Swifts have been there for years. It drew a small crowd last night as well. Many people think they are bats and others called them Chimney Swallows. It was sort of funny.
