clear and calm
We counted 31 Swifts going in the West tower and 10 into the North tower. Sat. Sept. 10.
Temp. was low 70's, no wind.
They went in at 8:15 pm.
The Jr. High chimney that had 3000 last year was torn down. We had counted there for many years. It was built in 1921 and migrating swifts had used it since it was built.
Our house has two masonry chimneys. Tonight, September 11, 2005, at about 7:45 pm Eastern time, we watched 18 chimney swifts descend into our chimney. It was a clear, cool night, with a half moon. We had fun doing it.

Zero birds -- 0
Comments: We were very disappointed, since last year our chimney was a gathering place and we had close to 100 birds. We suspect that Katrina chased them away. During August 2005 Swift Night Out, we counted 24 birds. Two nights before Katrina hit, we had 8 birds. And two nights after Katrina, we had no birds. We have seen none since. We had 12 hours of tropical storm force winds here as Katrina hit 175 miles to our west. We hope the birds are safe, and look forward to hosting them again next year.

3 Chimney Swifts
Clear and warm
Approximately two weeks ago I saw 10 swifts at the same location.
Tonight (9-11-0-05) 645 swifts went to roost in the Vermillion, South Dakota, high school chimney. I think that's a pretty good count, as accurate as I'll ever be able to do. Counted by tens with the clicker with a clear-sky background and then watched & waited for the last five holdouts. It's 82 degrees and a south wind maybe 15 mph by sunset.
We've had a week or ten days of unseasonably warm temps and hard south winds during the day, not conducive to migrating south.
Now the question is what happened last year when there were only a handful that went into the campus smokestack in September when there had been hundreds in August. It's possible that they'd switched to the high school chimney by then... (remember they're not using the smokestack at all this year), but I don't remember seeing them around town at that time last year either, so I don't know.
Good luck with your project,
On Saturday Sept. 10, 2005, on a clear warm night I observed 6-swifts entering my tower between 7:00pm and 7:50 pm central time. On Sunday Sept. 11, 2005 between 6:05 pm and 8:00 pm I observed 4-swifts entering my tower on a clear warm night. Alan J. Stanevich
Bellow is the report for our Chimney Swift count. My husband Regan and I really enjoyed doing this and will continue doing it for the years to come.
Also, I am president of the Oconee Rivers Audubon Society and announced the count to our members. Only 3 other people joined us this year and counted from a different chimney downtown Athens. Next year, I will announce the count earlier and I am hoping to get a bigger turn out.
